Planting flower bulbs with coffee grounds

From September to November spring bloomers go into the ground. A little coffee grounds improves soil structure, attracts earthworms and its smell is said to deter voles and squirrels.
What you need
- Flower bulbs
- Dried coffee grounds
- Compost
- Trowel
Step by step

Dig the hole
Dig holes about two to three times as deep as the bulb is tall.

Mix in grounds
Mix one tablespoon of grounds with a handful of compost and put it in the hole.

Set the bulb
Place the bulb tip up and cover it with soil.

Top-dress
Scatter a thin layer of grounds on the surface and water well once.
Good to know
- Don't pack grounds directly against the bulb or it may rot.
- Use a wire basket as extra protection against voles.
