Caring for houseplants in winter with coffee grounds

Less light and dry heating air slow growth. Coffee grounds only help in small amounts – dosed correctly they support foliage plants like monstera, ferns or pothos until spring.
What you need
- Thoroughly dried coffee grounds
- Watering can
- Optional: cold coffee (diluted)
Step by step
- 1
Dry the grounds well
Damp grounds go mouldy quickly indoors. Let them dry completely for several days.
- 2
Feed very sparingly
In winter add at most one teaspoon per pot every 6–8 weeks and work it in lightly.
- 3
Or use coffee water
Dilute cold coffee 1:4 with water and use it once a month.
- 4
Water less
Check with your finger that the top soil is dry before watering – waterlogging is the biggest winter risk.
Good to know
- Not for cacti, succulents or orchids.
- White film on the soil? Remove the grounds and use less.
